Blog: WPTouch plugin for WordPress

As I’ve mentioned in the past, and some of you may have seen if you’ve accessed this blog on a mobile device (iPod, PDA, etc), I’ve used a plugin for WordPress called MobilePress. I was very ‘neat’ and tidy, and pretty much “did what it said on the tin”.

This is how it looked:

Unfortunately, I found a better plugin that does the same thing – anyone viewing the blog from an iPod, iPhone or other similar device is shown the blog content in a mobile-friendly template, and is ultra quick to load. It’s called WPTouch and it looks like this:

So, what can it do that is so much better then:

  • Template styles to choose from (settings)
  • Categories & Tags for each post shown alongside title
  • Read snippet of content before full blog entry
  • Email blog entry
  • Post blog entry to Twittie, Twitterific, or Twittelator Pro
  • Save bookmark to Delicious, Digg, Reddit and others (see image below)

Click to see full size version

    Click for full size version

  • Search box to hunt down word or phrase in the page you are viewing
  • Change font size (small – large)
  • Next/previous entry navigation
  • View and submit comments

I know this list is similar (if somewhat shorter) than the MobilePress list, it is laid out better and is easy to find your way around. Enjoy!

Hi – Just wondering if you’d tried my mobile plugin? It’s different from other plugins in that instead of delivering the same theme / experience for all users of the plugin, mine retains the look and feel of the web theme across to mobile.

Doing this means you can retain your brand identity and really make an exciting mobile blog that looks amazing and functions even better! It works for every phone, not just new ones and can deliver any markup language a phone requires. It also does clever dynamic image resizing and device profiling.

If you fancy taking a look, the home page can be found here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wapple-architect/ – it’d be great to hear what you thought!

Why, have you got one and not told me … ?

The blurb from the developers does not mention the iPad, but does cover the WordPress blog when “viewed from an iPhone, iPod touch, Android, Opera Mini, Palm Pre and BlackBerry Storm mobile devices”.

There is a WPTouch Pro edtion (which will cost you) which does not currently support the iPad, but is part of their development programme.

Give you a call later and chat about meeting up at the weekend?

      D.
