Perhaps the expectation needs to be set, for the students right at the beginning of the course, that the feedback will take the format of &lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;X&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;, be delivered in the time-frame of &lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;Y&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;, and will cover all aspects of what was / wasn&#039;t written? Would that be enough to &#039;motivate&#039; the students to continue so they at least get as far as submitting an assignment?&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;We&#039;ll see.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Regards, David.&lt;/div&gt;</description>

Without a doubt in my mind, the most significant action that keeps elearners from escaping is feedback.

Feedback is a multifaceted thing, the most significant component of which is that provided by the teacher/tutor/instructor/facilitator.
