Nice post, AR has been gaining popularity for some time now, and I don’t think it is just a fad. Unlike virtual reality, AR doesn’t require big immersible and complicated virtual environments. It can be simple, portable yet very effective.

Thank you for sharing this. I was wowed by this. What a great way for anyone to be able to experience the wonderful offerings of the world from their computer. Although not a replacement for “the real thing,” the mapping that Microsoft is launching is a fascinating means for becoming familiar with cultures that one may never experience.

I recall, a long time ago, virtual programs that allowed simulations. One that comes to mind is a commercially offered interior design program that let you walk through a building that you planned to view clearances, color coordination, and placement of fixtures and furniture. I remember at that time, 16 years ago, just how fascinating it was to interact with the simulation.

I agree with previous posts that this is an out-of-classroom application. If it were accessible to the classroom, what a great tool it could be for applied sciences (engineering, medicine), geography and history, as well as sciences and arts.

Fantastic information! I’m glad to have been able to view the blog.

Mark – Thanks for this. Yes, AR is an out of the classroom technology but think about the possibilities if it could be used in the classroom? It is easier for educators to ‘police’ the use of mobile devices in the classroom than when out and about on a field trip, but if students could be encouraged to use them on field trips then why not when they return (e.g. using QR Codes to capture information when you’re out, and then use that information for a write up?).

As for the video, it is a good example of how AR could be used, but I’d be really worried that the mechanic working on my car had to rely on a glorified virtual Haynes Manual to service it and not the training he/she had!

I think “mobile” AR is certainly an out-of-the-classroom technology isn’t it, So – for me – (and relating to Rob De Lorenzo’s quote) activities such as field trips, etc are going to have to be designed so they *can* include the use of mobile devices. For one thing, teachers are going to have to stop viewing the devices as mobile phones and try to shift their thinking to “mobile computers”.

That’s mobile. Another area of AR is that of marker-based AR, where your camera reads a 2D marker and projects 3D models and other data. This may be more feasible in the classroom. There’s also image recognition and I’m not sure where the following example (in the YouTube video linked below) sits….marker based or image recognition?

Still. Augmented Reality in education? How about this for an example…
