Video: Don’t do this to your students …

A wake up call for everyone … especially those who think eLearning is as easy as providing an electronic resource! Please, don’t!

“Would you do this to your face-to-face students? Then don’t do it to your online students.”

I can actually hear the sense of entitlement in the narrator’s voice. Reminds me of Nirvana: “We are here now, entertain us!” I know that’s not what is meant, but that’s how it comes across, especially when he asks, “Is this what I paid for?” as though we owe him somehow.

Stephen – I agree, but we have to take some responsibility in providing adequate teaching materials; telling students to read a chapter of a textbook is not eLearning (it is certainly lazy though). I would hope that, at minimum, this kind of activity would at least be introduced properly and put into context of the subject and/or assessment criteria (“read this chapter for background into ‘X’ subject for ‘Y’ reasons and ‘Z’ activity)?

Yes, this is definitely a good example on how not to train/teach in an online environment. It best to find out how your users/clients or employees learn best. Present the information in way that is appealing and encourages interaction.

Thanks for posting this David, it strikes a chord regarding the work we are doing with Friendfeed right now.
